If you’ve ever played a contact sport, such as rugby, you’ll be aware of two mind states: the ball is on the other side, with the fast wingers, and you’re just jogging to keep the line; the opponents defense is solid and the ball starts flowing down towards you – it’s in your hands, and you are AWAKE.

Focused, planning, calculating, committing.

Now, why are we not like this all the time?

You have a report you need to write? If the report threatened to physically tackle you, would you hesitate? I assure you it would be dealt with post haste.

Try it.

Focus your mind. Control, actively, what you think about. What you set as a target then falls easily to the scythe that your mind has become.

Reject distractions. Imagine walls pushing out from the centre of your mind, sweeping aside clutter and rubbish that stops you from dominating your own life.

Focus. Plan. Calculate. Commit.

Getaway

Gravel driveways always make me feel homesick.. Never lived in a house with one, so I’m guessing it’s the pining for familiar tar(mac)?
It’s starting to drizzle, but it’s all good, we’re about to play cards! Conquer & Secca to be specific. (Ethiopian card games, with influence from the Italians maybe)
Everyone is dealt 13 cards, in Conquer, with the person who starts having an extra one (to drop). The aim is to form 3 sets of 3 cards (Trice) and one set of 4 (Quatrice). The cards have to be of the same suit and in consecutive order, or a full suit of the same number. Each player drops a card they don’t want and picks from the remaining deck, one card at a time. One can pick a card that has been dropped by another player only if they have “dropped down” i.e placing some of the sets you have already made, but with a sum numerical value of at least 41 (j q k = 10, a = 11 or 1, depending on if you put it with 2 and 3, or after K).
Dropping down is an advantage but it does present risks, such as giving other players the opportunity to fill in your set, eg if you drop a set of 567, 4 & 8 can be added to either side, and if the player that does this does it again, they fullfill their quota for a Quatrice. The joker can be any card. The game is played with one deck (containing a single joker) per two players. Two decks with five players is an ok stretch.
